Well, guacamole is not a Turkish food as avocado is not originally from Turkey. Although producing avocado started in the southern part of Turkey about 30 years ago, consumption of it hasn’t become that popular yet. It is grown especially in Antalya, Mersin and Mugla, which have the right climate for this extremely healthy vegetable. I don’t know why people don’t comsume it enough although it is grown in our country. The reason might be its price, it is about $2 each or more at supermarkets and this may not be affordable for everyone here. Other vegetables or fruits that are originally grown here are much cheaper when compared to avocado.
Wikipedia says that guacamole is from Mexican cuisine and that it has become a part of American cuisine. It is still not a part of our cuisine, but I guess it will be in the near future. We’ve started to see the programs on TV or on the Internet explaining the health benefits of avocado, so Turkish people are becoming more familiar with it. As bad cholesterol is a problem for many people, a food with no calories is always welcomed here!
We love dips and sauces or mezzes and we often have one of these to accompany our dishes. So guacamole could be the best way to eat avocado in Turkey. We can have it either as a side dish or mezze with meat or chicken or as a dip to enjoy with pita bread.
We are in winter, right? So I thought it would be good to make guacamole with citrus fruits and pumpkin so that its nutritional value gets even higher. We had little pumpkin left, so why not use it in guacamole? You know basic guacamole needs avocado, sea salt and lime juice. And you can add some other ingredients to your taste or depending on the season.
We had it as a snack beetween breakfast and lunch today. We had it with cold grapefruit juice and it balanced the creamy flavor of avocado; they went perfect together! You must try guacamole with citrus fruit juice!

- 1 avocado, ripe
- 1 lime
- A pinch of sea salt
- 1 grapefruit
- 2 tbsp black olives, pitted and chopped
- ¼ cup thinly sliced pumpkin
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Cut avocado in halves, remove its pit.
- Carve it with the help of a tsp and transfer into a bowl.
- Squeeze lime on it, add salt and mash with a fork.
- Squeeze grapefruit and share its juice in glasses.
- Place guacamole into grapefruit skins.
- Heat olive oil in a pan.
- Fry pumpkins in it for a few minutes.
- Top guacamole with fried pumpkins and chopped black olives.
- Serve your guacamole with fresh grapefruit juice.
