I’m sure these red velvet powdered sugar cookies are still another treat that shows the love of red these days. We’re in the month of red and pink right? They are so pupular around Valentine’s Day, so you might want to see our Classic One Layer Red Velvet Cake as well before you plan your special day.
The idea of making these cookies came out when I was making red velvet chocolate chip cookies. While I was making the cookie balls, I thought it would be a nice addition to add some chocolate inside the cookie dough, so I used 1 tablespoon Nutella. Wow! The result is amazing. Just get a bite and have a look at the remaining piece, you will fall in love with.
- Room temperature ingredients: Butter, egg and milk must be at room temperature.
- Powdered Sugar: I use powdered sugar, so this is a fudgy and melting-in-your mouth type of cookie recipe. If you want chewier cookies, use brown sugar ora combination of half brown half White sugar.
- Nutella: It is just to make the steps easier. You can melt 1 and ½ tablespoon semi-sweet chocolate chips in a double broiler and use it instead.
- All Purpose Flour&Cocoa Powder Ratio: It depends on how red you want your cookies to be. If you use all purpose flour only, you end up with a bright red color. Cocoa powder gives that velvety look.
- Red Food Coloring: Although I don’t like using it much in baking, I must honeslty accept that I love the color it gives to cookies and cakes. I tried substituting it with beets when making muffins and saw that the beautiful color of beets doesn’t remain the same after baking. I heard about beet powder is used as a substitute for red food coloring, but never used it myself. Probably, it gives the same result as beets. So I think it is okay to use the food coloring once or twice a year, especially in February.
Pro Tip: I combined all-purpose flour and cocoa powder in the recipe, so my cookies don’t look too red, that’s how I like them. You can arrange the tone of the color red yourself. You can add more food coloring after you combine everything if you like it redder. You might need a little more flour then. Or you can just reduce the amount of cocoa powder and add more flour instead to have a redder look.
How To Make
- First, mix butter and sugar with a spatula until creamy.
- Second, beat an egg well in a small bowl and add it into the butter mixture. Mix them well together.
- Third, add in milk, nutella, vanilla extract and red food coloring. Mix well.
- Fourth, prepare the dry ingredients. In a medium bowl, whisk in flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking soda. Gradually add this into the butter mixture and combine everything well. Chill the dough in the refrigerator at least for 1 hour.
- Fifth, scoop out 1 tablespoon of dough and form a ball. Put it in a bowl of powdered sugar and roll it around. Place on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 11 minutes in a preheated oven at 350F/180C.
- Finally, remove from oven, press gently on each with your two fingers or with the bottom of a spoon and wait on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Then transfer on a cooling rack and let them cool completely.
- Optionally, you can sift extra powdered sugar over the cookies when they are still warm.
How To Store
They keep well at room temperature for up to a week, but they will disappear much earlier.
Also, you can freeze them if you want. These cookies can be kept in the freezer for a few months. If you want, you can also freeze unbaked cookie balls. You don't need to thaw them before baking. Just bake them for extra 1 minute.
Can I Use Red Velvet Cake Mix?
Yes you can. Use ⅓ cup oil or melted butter for a 18.25 oz box. Plus use 2 eggs. Combine these with the cake mix, chill and then roll in the powdered sugar and bake.

- 1 stick butter (115g), softened at room temperature
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 egg, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon milk, at room temperature
- 1 tablespoon nutella, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 and ½ tablespoon red food coloring (liquid)
- 1 and ¾ cup all purpose flour
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 cup powder sugar for coating
- Mix butter and sugar with a spatula until creamy.
- Beat egg in another bowl and add it into the mixture.
- Add in milk, melted chocolate or nutella, vanilla and red food coloring. Mix well.
- Combine flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking soda in a separate bowl and gradually add this into the butter mixture. Combine everything well using a spatula.
- Chill the dough at least for 1 hour.
- Preheat oven to 350F (180C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
- Scoop out 1 tablespoon of dough and make it a ball. Put 1 cup powdered sugar in a bowl and roll the cookie ball into the powdered sugar. Coat it well with powdered sugar. Place on the parchment paper. Bake for 11 minutes.
- Remove from oven, gently press don each and wait on the baking sheets for 5 minutes. Then let them cool completely on a wire rack.
The powdered sugar I used to coat the cookies almost melted, so I sifted some more after they partly cooled.
