Healthy Red Velvet Grapefruit Smoothie is a real immune system booster. Packed with refreshing citrus fruit and pomegranate. No sugar is added. It both energizes your body and functions as a grapefruit smoothie detox that your body needs especially after parties.

I’m just in love with the bright red color of this smoothie. I do love when the food has its natural color with no artificial ingredients. When the nature serves us its beauty, we don’t need anything else. The number of colors you can get with various fruit and vegetables is endless. Although most people think about the color green when they hear the word healthy, it doesn’t have to be so. Valentine’s Day is approaching and you can prepare this gorgeous looking grapefruit smoothie for a healthy treat to your beloved one.

How To Make

Making this grapefruit smoothie recipe might not sound like the best Valentine’s Day recipe, but you will see that it’s wrong if you make it for someone special in the morning. Leave the morning coffee out on that day and give this smoothie a try. Satisfaction is definitely guaranteed! This smoothie not only looks stunning thanks to pomegranate, but it also tastes so good. Super refreshing and energizing! It is a wonderful combination of citrus fruit and pomegranate. The recipe is quite straightforward and has two simple steps:

  1. Put segments of grapefruit, orange and lime in a food processor.  Puree until smooth.
  2. Add as many pomegranate arils as needed until you get the desired red color.

For Valentine's Day

Some special days have certain colors. And the color of Valentine’s Day is red. Everyone knows that red is the color of passion and love, so it’s not surprising to have lots of red stuff around us these days. Well, I always try to use natural food in my recipes, but I sometimes make exceptions for special days. I think exceptions don’t make us completely unhealthy. If you don’t mind using food coloring, don’t miss our Classic Red Velvet Cake and Super Moist Red Velvet Cupcakes!

On the other hand, this grapefruit smoothie is kid friendly as well since it is completely healthy and there aren't any artificial sweeteners in it. I just added 1 teaspoon grape molasses. But not to add sweetness to the smoothie. It really doesn’t need it. Grape molasses is there for its health benefits. Combining any citrus fruit with grape molasses makes it even better for immune system. It doubles the boosting effect.

You will see that it is possible to celebrate an occasion with this amazingly healthy and fresh grapefruit juice smoothie. Celebrations don’t always mean unhealthy foods, right?

Health Benefits

Besides grapefruit, this smoothie contains pomegranate arils and citrus fruit like lime and orange. All these are good for you. They are rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system.

Besides vitamin C, these fruit are great source of potassium, magnesium and vitamin B. They are perfect antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory effects.

What's more, thanks to the fiber these fruit contain, this smoothie helps the digestive system and even good for weight loss.

Alternative Flavors

I love that smoothies are quite customizable. You can easily turn it into a grapefruit banana smoothie by adding some chopped banana in the food processor. Other alternatives might be:

  • strawberry
  • pineapple
  • spinach
  • mango
  • apple
  • ginger

Can I add dairy products into this healthy smoothie? Yes! You can make this grapefruit smoothie with greek yogurt, milk or kefir just like I did in our Blackberry Fig Kefir Smoothie.

If you want to keep it vegan, use almond milk or coconut milk instead.

Probably a dumb question. But I am gonna ask anyway. Do you peel the grapefruit and orange? Do you remove the flesh from the white membrane as well? This looks absolutely amazing!

Hi Amy! That's right, peel them well. Otherwise, you end up with a bitter smoothie.
