Spicy shrimp is one of our favorite appetizers and I can’t believe how I haven’t shared it with you until today! Many beer-lovers in Turkey think that the best food to pair with cold beer is french fries or roasted salty peanuts, but Yusuf and I think that spicy shrimp is as good as these.
It’s typical to order peanuts or french fries in Turkish pubs if you’re drinking beer, these are served even if you don’t order in some places. These are considered as the must-eat appetizers in Turkey when you are enjoying your very cold beer. Is it the same in your country? What foods are paired with beer in your area? Besides these appetizing companions, beer can be paired with any tasty appetizers you like. We always love to create new combinations and this spicy shrimp was created at one of our movie nights when we ran out of peanuts and potatoes. We found out that we had a package of frozen shrimp and we didn’t follow any recipes when making this irresistibly tasty shrimp stir fry. We just tossed our favorite ingredients into the wok. We LOVED it so much that we’ve made it several times since then!
I can eat anything based on garlic and flavorful tomato paste. And Yusuf loves to add hot chili and isot pepper in almost all dishes, so we didn’t think much how to season shrimp. Another ingredient to enrich the flavor was a herb which is not that common in Turkish cuisine. I’m talking about rosemary. It is not a well known herb here and thyme is used in place of it. We started to grow rosemary in our balcony last year and we’ve used it in many dishes, it has already become one of our favorite herbs!
To give it a nice color and sourish flavor, we also used fresh tomato paste (recipe coming very soon!) which we made a week ago. It was a great final touch and the spicy shrimp became even more irresistible!
Although it is tasty enough as is, we wanted to turn it into a more festive like treat and we made a delectable tomato sauce to serve with it. We enjoyed this shrimp stir fry dipping into that appetizing tomato sauce and it becomes a divine treat this way.

Spicy Shrimp with Tomato Sauce
Shrimp stiry fry seasoned with chili, isot, garlic and rosemary served with flavorful tomato sauce.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 20 minutes
- Total Time: 25 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
- Shrimp Stir Fry:
- 500g frozen shrimp
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- A few sprigs fresh rosemary, minced
- A pinch of hot chili
- A pinch of isot
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- Tomato Sauce:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tomatoes, chopped in small pieces
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt to taste
- A few sprigs parsley, chopped
- Heat a wok over medium high heat and toss in shrimp.
- Let it release water and cook until a little water is left.
- Drizzle over olive oil and stir.
- Dissolve tomato paste with a little water and add it into wok.
- Add in minced garlic and rosemary, stir.
- Sprinkle chili, isot and salt, cook for a minute.
- Add lime juice and transfer onto a plate.
- For the tomato sauce, heat olive oil in a pan.
- Add tomatoes, garlic and salt. Cook until thick.
- Pour it into a bowl and add chopped parsley.
- Serve shrimp with this tomato sauce.
