These lovely Button Cookies have been in my mind since I saw the picture of them on a Turkish magazine last year. I did my shopping in a hurry at the market and saw these on the cover of a magazine next to the check out just after I made the payment. I loved the idea of button cookies, they were so cute! I knew I must try it! I didn’t pay attention to the name of the magazine, and unfortunately I couldn’t find it later! Anyway, I know how to make cookies, right? So it shouldn’t be that hard! Making these cookies was more like an experiment for me.

Who wouldn’t like cookies in button shape? You can play with their colors or size depending on your taste. It was really fun to make these button cookies.

These button cookies are not melting in your mouth kind, they are more like crispy biscuits. It’s fun to eat them too! They look like broken buttons when bitten!

These button cookies will make a perfect edible gift too! Wouldn’t it be great to receive such a gift from a friend? You can use your friend’s favorite colors, put button cookies in a nice box and tie it with ribbons to make your gift even nicer! I’m sure it would be surprising!

It was the first time I used food coloring, so I was quite excited about the result. I decided to make them in five colors; light yellow, light brown, dark brown, pink and purple. I just used food coloring in two of these! I used cocoa powder for brown ones.

Did I tell you before how much I love playing with dough? It wouldn’t be wrong to say that my favorite kitchen tool is my rolling pin! I enjoy making balls from dough and rolling them out!
I used purple food coloring for this dough. But I must warn you not to make the mistake I made when kneading it. I forgot to wear gloves and my hands had purple stains when I finished kneading! It was removed after many times of washing, but it would have been better if I had worn gloves.

This one will make my light yellow button cookies. It’s the plain dough, no color additions. I used my smallest round cookie cutter to have perfect round buttons.
After cutting them in circles, we need a smaller cutter to imprint an inner circle. I already used the smallest one in my kitchen and I didn’t have a cutter smaller than this. Do you have any idea what I used instead?

You see I used my husband’s wedding ring as a cookie cutter! Can you read my name inside? After imprinting inner circles on cookies, I made holes of buttons with a wooden skewer; 4 holes for each button.

If you find it hard to transfer cookies after giving them shapes, you can place them on baking sheet right after cutting them. It will be easier to imprint and make holes there.

So if you want to make surprise gifts for your friends or if you want to have fun with your kids or just yourself, these button cookies are perfect!

Hi! I just saw this page and I am amazed! However, can I ask if I can use all-purpose flour instead of wheat flour? And I don't have vanilla so is it okay if I leave it out?
Zerrin says
Thank you Tan Kang! You can use all-purpose flour and vanilla gives just a little flavor, so it's up to you to leave it out.
