Good news for Turkish people with celiac disease!

The bakery that belongs to municipality in Izmir, one of the biggest cities in the country, announced that they started to produce gluten-free bread. It is said that they worked on this project for about a year and finally they succeeded. Their goal is to market this special bread to people with celiac disease not just in Izmir, but in all cities of Turkey. People could easily reach gluten-free bread in this way. It is also reported that the price of this bread is quite affordable.

It is almost impossible to find gluten-free bread in Turkish bakeries, so the bakery in Izmir might trigger bakeries in other cities too. The number of people with celiac disease has increased in Turkey lately, so bakeries and other producers should consider these people more.

Thanks for posting about this, Zerrin! I have Celiac disease, and my husband is Turkish. Fortunately his wonderful mother is a nurse, so she was able to feed me well when I visited Turkey for the first time last fall.

Evidently people with Celiac disease can get gluten-free products only by mail-order from a pharmacy. Hopefully this bakery will help to raise awareness of Celiac disease in Turkey and make gluten-free products more easily available to people who are gluten intolerant.
